Those who've gone over to the "dark side" -- PR, who want to know how best to work with PR people, or who want to know more about how to break into it or practice PR/marketing
Name (First and last would be great, nickname if you must):
Jason C. Rosenthal
Your media affiliation:
Owner, operator and editor of the Southern California News Wire.
Also finishing up at Cal State Fullerton.
Best media moment:
Being the first to break some stories on my little blog before the big guys, where, at times, they have asked me where I obtain my information.
Worst media moment:
I was on the air at an radio station here in Southern California that will remain nameless, and general remains nameless, when I violated the first rule of broadcasting.
Favorite publication, website, or blog:
Locally I enjoy The Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, OC Metro, OC Business, OC Weekly, Riverside Press-Enterprise, and the Los Angeles Newspaper Group.
On an national level, The New York Times, Weekly Standard, The Nation, Slate.com, Fark.com, BBC World News, and anything else I can get my hands on.
Advice you'd give to a college journalism student:
Once you gather the basics of journalism you need to get on the typing ball before you graduate from school. The world of media has greatly changed and you need to stay ahead of the curve well before being forced to play in "the real world."
Current project:
My current project is my site, Southern California News Wire, SoCalNewsWire.com, where I have had some success, but the ills of an one-man-band, excuse me, backpack journalist, has shown its limitations.
Finishing up school full time and operating an news organization has its toll regrettably.
I have been looking to expand.
For that I need writers and some type of funding.
If it is anything people want to fund these days it is an news operation.
Also I have an side project, which due to my current project I have not been able to devote much time to, called The Southern Californian.
Designed to be a little bit like The New Yorker, featuring longer articles on anything about Southern California.
