After a several year hiatus, the O.C. Press Club is pleased to announce the return of its journalism awards. To qualify, stories must have been published in an O.C.-based publication or Website or written by an O.C.-based writer (local writers in national publications allowed). Only stories/photographs published or posted between Jan. 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008 will be considered.

Award Categories

1. Best News Story

2. Best Feature Story

3. Best Sports Story

4. Best Business Story

5. Best Art/Culture/Entertainment story, review, feature or column

6. Best Food/Travel story, review, feature or column

7. Investigative/Watchdog Award
8. Best Series

9. David McQuay Award for Best Columnist

10. Marjorie Freeman Award for Best Humorous Story

11. Best Blog/New Media/News Video

12. Best Photojournalist (must submit 2-5 samples of work, as appeared in publication).

13. The Real O.C. award: for the story, review, feature, blog, column or photo that best captures something special, surprising, telling or essential about Orange County

(Following awards not for entry; selected by the judges/Press Club)

14. Best College Journalist (scholarship award)

15. Martin Brower PR Achievement Award

16. Sky Dunlap Award for Lifetime Achievement

O.C. Press Club 2009 Journalism Context Rules and Procedures:

-Daily, weekly or monthly, print or digital publications qualify for all the topical awards.

-Entry is via PDF as published/posted, or for those without access to PDF of their stories, links are acceptable. No hard copies. Online stories must clearly indicate that the story was published/posted in 2008. Link to a blog must be to 2008 content. Email entries to OCpressclub@gmail.com.

-Please do not alter the PDF or online version from how the story/post actually ran. The press club reserves the option to review all winners to assure compliance via hard copy or Internet records (i.e. archive.org).

-All entries due by midnight June 10, 2009.

-Entrants must be current members of the Orange County Press Club. Dues of $25 (journalist) or $50 (public relations) must be received along with entry fees from new/past members to compete.

-Each individual entry is $5. There is no limit on the number of entries per category or for the competition per journalist, but please submit a particular story in only one award category. For Best Columnist and Best Series category, please submit 3-5 samples, for a $5 total fee per category entry. The Press Club reserves the right to not award a winner in any category with fewer than five entries.

-Fees paid via PayPal preferred, or by check with clear reference to stories entered via PDF. Go to http://ocpressclub.ning.com for instructions on payments for entries and for membership dues via PayPal.

-If you or your publication must pay by check, please email us for instructions at ocpressclub@gmail.com.

-Please include in the body of your email your name, address, publication(s) and dates of stories corresponding in a clear way to your attached PDFs. Please include OC PRESS CLUB AWARDS ENTRY in the subject line.

-Award announcement ceremony with distribution of certificates/trophies (no cash, alas—that was the Orange County Fair awards!) to be held Thursday, July 30 at The Island Hotel in Fashion Island.

New certificate program for magazine and online writing is in the works

Not sure I can break the news here, but there is a local effort underway to create a "certificate program" that trains those that want to write for magazines and Web sites. What do you think? Would this help set standards for citizen journalists and those that don't have the Journalism degree or work experience?
